B Grade, Division 2

OMK’S 2023/24 season campaign resulted in a resounding success as the Diggers triumphed over Phillip Island in the B2 premiership.

Wonthaggi’s McMahon Reserve hosted the final showdown in breezy conditions.

OMK won the toss and chose to bat.

The Diggers sent in club president Russ White to open, who paved the way to victory with an early 58 runs.

Justin Greenwood and Bradley Hayes continued putting handy runs on the scoreboard, adding 25 and 29 runs respectively.

Later in the innings, Scott Handley flicked the switch and sealed the deal for the Diggers with an exceptional 81 run haul.

Handley rounded out the innings in partnership with Shane Taylor, who accumulated 30 runs.

Both batsmen were not out at the end of the day.

Phillip Island made an attempt to slow OMK’s run, with Andrew Tolley and captain Tarryn Allan taking two wickets each.

A fifth wicket was claimed by David Womersley.

OMK went into Sunday ready to defend 5/254.

A mighty bowling effort from Ben Maguire ensured Phillip Island could not gain any momentum on the scoreboard.

Maguire claimed an impressive 6/45, quickly chipping away at Phillip Island’s batting order.

Clint Wilson produced Phillip Island’s best batting performance, making 39 not out.

Tony Hornsby contributed 25 runs.

The rest of OMK’s bowling efforts were shared between four bowlers – Handley, White, Taylor and Greenwood, who each claimed a scalp.

Phillip Island were bowled out 10/141, conceding the flag to the Diggers.

OMK had plenty to celebrate after the match, taking home both B Grade premierships.
