THE air was filled with a mix of excitement and a few nervous jitters as the newest members of Wonthaggi Primary School stepped through the school gates for the start of their schooling days today.

Greeted by Principal Wendy Truett at the school gates the atmosphere was tinged with sense of familiarity with many of this year’s preps having the advantage of older siblings having walked the corridors before them.

It’s an exciting year at Wonthaggi with renovations and new buildings set to start before the end of the year after the electoral promise of $6.7 million to redevelop the school.

Whilst there were a few tears, on both sides, the smallest students were ready to start the school year, excited to be seeing their friends, playing sport, developing their skills and learning new topics.

“We spend a lot of time transitioning the preps prior to their first day,” foundation teacher Jo Ross explained.

“Making the school a familiar and comfortable environment (ahead of the big day).”

Jo explained that each student also received a letter during the holidays that was all about their teacher with one parent even commenting that their child reads the letter each night before bed – a touching and thoughtful gesture.

“It’s a way for them to get to know us. They are a great bunch and we have had a really great start to the year.”

As the bell rang to commence the first day, a myriad of emotions played out. There were tears – a natural response to the mix of excitement and trepidation of stepping into the unknown. However, the caring and supportive environment from the teachers and classroom assistants very quickly had the tears turned around.

Dinosaurs and farm animals were played with, stories read, drawings made, Play-Doh modelled, and magnetic Meccano-like shapes made into endless possibilities from the imagination.

This year’s Wonthaggi Primary School foundation teachers include Jo, Sarah, Cassie and Taya.

Looking ahead, the preps expressed their anticipation for the upcoming year, for some swimming was at the top of the list, whilst for others maths, reading and sport.
