THE Gippsland Goannas Over-70 cricketers welcomed their counterparts from the Endeavour Hills/Bayside Over-70 team to the Yinnar Recreation Reserve to play their round five match on Tuesday, January 28.

This match had been washed out prior to Christmas.

After Monday’s heat, it was pleasant to have to wear three layers of clothing in order to keep out the chills of the westerly wind.

Winning the toss, the Goannas batted first with Warren Dummett and Rob Francis opening the innings.

Australian opening bowler Ron Kasputtis struck in the fourth over, inducing a skier from Dummett (six runs from 20 balls) which was well caught by the wicketkeeper.

Donald Cameron came in and was going along nicely when he stumbled on a run and strained a hamstring.

He had made five from 10 balls.

Francis retired soon after for 16 from his 30 balls, bringing Neil Meredith and Garry Rose to the crease.

They were both bowled by Peter Hockey after 15 balls, with Mero scoring 19 runs and Rose six.

Steve Lincoln and Ian Gibson then took the score to 3/65 at the 20-over drinks break.

Gibbo retired for 13 runs and Lincoln was bowled by Joe McMaster for 30 from 22 balls.

The score was then 4/98 after 25 overs.

Ian Southall and Andrew Smith kept the score ticking over, with Southy retiring for 31 and Smith lbw for 21 from 29 balls faced.

Murray Moore, 23 not out from 19, Gordon Cowling 9, caught, from 7 and Barrie Nunn 2 not out were the remaining batsmen, and the Goanna’s score after their 40 overs was 6/187.

After building their own salad rolls for lunch, the Endeavour Hills/Bayside (EHB) team started its innings, with Southall and Cowling opening the attack.

After eight overs, for 11 runs, Nunn and Kel Bond came on.

Both openers retired, for a total of 16 runs from 60 balls, and Bond had John Wilson well stumped by Ian Gibson for 12 in the 14th over.

Four overs later, David Green skied a ball to cover for Cowling to take a good catch.

Bondy then had 2/17 from five overs, and the score had advanced to 2/58 at drinks.

Francis and Meredith bowled seven overs between them, for just 22 runs, as Southy came back for two and Andrew Smith replaced Mero.

A good throw from Moore to Southall had McMaster short of his ground, and Smith had Stammers sky one to Southy for a first-ball duck.

The score was 4/87 after 28 overs.

Moore had four overs and Smith five overs for 1/15.

Southall and Cowling bowled the last four overs, finishing with 1/22 and 0/7 respectively, as the EHB innings concluded at 5/133.

The Goannas 70’s have the bye next week and their round 10 game will be on February 18 against the West Gippsland Wombats at the Sale Oval.

Both Goannas 50’s and 60’s have a game on Sunday next, February 9.
