Historic day for Poowong as reserves break three-year drought

POOWONG welcomed Nilma Darnum players and supporters on Saturday in overcast conditions, with the ground in good condition, and a big crowd resulting in some interesting results.
Poowong reserves were beaten by 240 points last round, winners today by 22 points giving them their first victory in three years. A 262 point turn around this created a lot of excitement, the first club song in years sung with gusto, fantastic for the club.
The day started with the fourths winning 11.10.76 to 3.1.19. The Under 18’s went down to Nilma Darnum 10.8.68 to 2.5.17, netball Poowong won u13’s, u/15’s and u/17’s losses in A, B and C.
To the senior game with two teams on the same level, unfortunately Poowong had four changes out Mitch Cochrane, Josh Chiavaroli, Jack de Kock and Conner Ives replaced by David O’Neill, Donald McDonald, Tyran Lord and Troy Niewerth in for his first senior game up from the U18’s.
Poowong kicked to the Nyora end, Nilma were first off the mark, Poowong had a couple of chances, Nilma led the way at quarter time 3.5.23 to Poowong 0.1.1.
Poowong had to lift in the second quarter going forward early. They finally hit the target with Alex Henshall goaling from a handball, followed by Matt Cozzio kicking a goal from HFF. Poowong were working hard with Alex Henshall kicking his second from the boundary, Nilma managed a point before Tyran Lord kicked Poowong’s fourth to go in at half time with a two-point lead Poowong 4.3.27 to Nilma Darnum 3.7.25.


Light rain started after half time with the game in the balance play was moving up and down the ground, it would come down to which team could make the most of their opportunities. Nilma kicked the first goal of the term followed by two more before Poowong lifted with Zac Gray goaling. Nilma replied to open up by 19-points leaving Poowong with a job ahead, after a couple of chances Jarvis Brown goaled from CHF and Alex Henshall kicked his third from the boundary to reduce the gap at three quarter time to three points Poowong 7.5.47 to Nilma 7.8.50.
Both coaches urged the players to work hard, they both had opportunities to score the result, Nilma added four points with Poowong two points, leaving Nilma Darnum to take a five-point win in a tight game. Poowing 7.7.49 to Nilma Darnum 7.12.54.
Best Players Jarvis Brown, Zac Gray, Alex Henshall, Aaron Damon, Mitch Molloy and Connor Cunningham.
So close to our first win, unfortunately with six or seven injuries, great for the club is the experience our Under 18 players are gaining. Next week off to Neerim South, the long trip all the best to everyone.
