• A Grade, Division 2

CHASING Phillip Island’s competitive 168, Nyora couldn’t find enough solid contributors with the bat, and those who got going were unable to press on.

The Sharks eventually claimed a 52-run win, containing Nyora to 116 all out.

Nyora captain Henry Dolphin gave his side hope during its run chase, opening the batting, but Phillip Island’s Kurt Lane knocked him over for 32.

Still, it was a strong match for Dolphin, given his day 1 bowling figures of 4/36.

Gavin and Jake Hackett were other Nyora batsmen to get starts, but managed only 31 and 22 respectively.

After David Womersley’s 81 not out on day 1 helped set up Phillip Island’s solid total, Heath Womersley did his bit to crush Nyora’s hopes on day 2, claiming 5/18.

Teammate Clint Wilson took the scalps of a couple of top order Nyora batsmen with his controlled bowling enabling him to finish with 3/17 from almost 20 overs.

Such was his dominance, Wilson sent down 10 maidens.

Kilcunda Bass does enough against MDU

KILCUNDA Bass added just six runs to its day 1 total, with Meeniyan Dumbalk United (MDU) collecting the final two wickets, but set a challenging target of 185.

Scott Browne worked hard to give MDU a chance of achieving the task, making 66, but when his knock ended the Demons found themselves 6/138.

Kilcunda Bass didn’t allow anyone other than Browne to have much impact with the bat for MDU, finishing up 19-run winners.

Harrison Berry’s 5/31 was a major factor in Kilcunda Bass defending its total, and his wickets included the dangerous Browne.

Berry also dismissed a couple of other top order batsmen.

While he was the winner’s only multiple wicket taker, he was well supported by a strong team effort from other members of the Kilcunda Bass attack.

Browne was commendable for the beaten MDU outfit, having captured 3/41 prior to his strong showing with the bat, while his teammate Steven Arnup finished with 3/39 before the pair opened the batting.

Arnup was one of four MDU batsmen to fall for 14, with Mitch McGrath’s 23 the next best effort behind Browne.

Glen Alvie fights hard to frustrate Korumburra

ONLY 29 overs on day 1 and a stubborn rear-guard action from Glen Alvie combined to thwart Korumburra’s day 2 thrust for victory.

A blistering Inshaka Siriwardena century helped Korumburra establish a commanding position, with the team registering 6/253 from its 52 overs.

Skipper, keeper and fellow Sri Lankan Rumesh Rangana also fired for Korumburra, making 54.

Rival captain and keeper Lachlan Harris hit an attacking 44, the only score of any note for Glen Alvie.

But Glen Alvie’s Nathan Findlay and Wayne Luke put an end to Korumburra’s victory hopes.

The pair finished unbeaten, with Findlay seeing off 33 balls and Luke 20 as they achieved a draw, with Glen Alvie making 7/87 off its 52 overs at a rate of just 1.67 per over.

While Glen Alvie’s Houdini act will long be remembered, it is the extraordinary exploits of Siriwardena that will be most vivid in the minds of those who were at Korumburra Recreation Reserve.

Having scored runs at will, he then transfixed the Glen Alvie batsmen when he bowled, sending down 20 overs for the scarcely believable return of 3/16, including 15 maidens!

Mind you, Harry McNeill did alright too with ball in hand for Korumburra, grabbing four Glen Alvie wickets and conceding just 35 runs off 19 overs.

Tough for batsmen, but Foster gets it done against Club

A HARD-EARNED 122 all out was enough for Foster as its bowlers set about the task in determined fashion, refused to relent and drove their side to a 21-run win over Wonthaggi Club.

Benjamin East was the Tigers top scorer with 38, with extras (23) the next biggest contributor.

Matrix Chisholm (39) and Mitch Davey (24 not out) were the only Club batsmen to get going as Jack Gay and Josh Toner took three wickets each for the delighted Foster side, conceding just 47 runs between them off almost 14 combined overs.

Both those bowlers did damage to the top of Wonthaggi’s batting order, with Gay continuing to be a wrecking ball when the middle order was exposed.

Gay and Toner received support from East, with 2/15 from six overs, who with Harvey Griggs (2/10 off one over) helped finish off Wonthaggi’s tail.
