LEONGATHA and District Cricket Association’s junior competition is off to a strong start.

The association has seen excellent numbers in the U11s and U13s, which are gearing up to play their second and third rounds respectively next week.

Although numbers are lower in the U15s and U17s, a solid foundation has been set up for an exciting competition.

“We are playing most of our underage teams on weeknights so its easier for families,” the association’s junior chairman Scott Checkley said.

“The clubs have done really well to offer great programs to its juniors.”

One of those programs is Woolies Blast, offered to children

between the ages of five and 10.

Woolies Blast is open to young children of all skills and abilities to learn the enjoyment of cricket through game-based activities.

“Due to the changes to the age range in the Woolies Blast program, the association has included the U11s team as an introductory competition. It’s a soft ball competition that helps them to develop confidence and basic skills,” Checkley said.

“The clubs have been working really hard to ensure their juniors have the opportunity to grow as players from the base up.”

The clubs have seen a good mix of boys and girls getting involved in the junior program.

Rep sides will soon be selected, with teams to be entered in the U15s and the U13s in the Gippsland Cricket League (GCL) competition.

However, for children who have been unsure about starting cricket, its not too late to get involved.

“If more kids want to contact their local clubs, its not too late to join in. We just want to offer them the opportunity to love the game,” Checkley said.

“It’s a good foundation to find enjoyment in the game and continue playing for years to come. We’ve had young cricketers come through to play for Victoria and recently we had Harry Hoekstra play in the U19s for Australia.”

All junior draws can be found on Play HQ.
