B Grade, Division 1
AFTER choosing to bat, Korumburra has Trevor Allen (38) to thank for mustering sufficient runs to defend, the Cobras bowlers then delivering a strong performance with the ball to knock over Meeniyan Dumbalk United for a couple of runs less after the Demons were set just 79 for victory.
Tom Jenkin (15) was the only other Cobra to reach double figures with the willow, as Korumburra was dismissed in just under 19 overs on its home deck.
All five MDU bowlers got wickets with Simon McRae taking 3/24 off four overs, while Mike Olden claimed the valuable scalp of Allen and finished with a neat 2/8 from five overs.
Keiran Brown was the other multiple wicket taker for the narrowly beaten Demons, making a couple of top-order breakthroughs on his way to 2/22 in five overs.
Olden followed up his impressive exploits with the ball by making 22 runs, his opening partner Wayne Prosser managing 15.
However, the Korumburra bowlers wreaked havoc on the rest of the MDU lineup with Anthony Dyke’s unbeaten nine the next best score.
Cobras skipper Shane Dole captured 3/7 at little more than a run per over, while teammate Scott Head managed 3/16 from four and a bit overs, and Bryce Riddell chimed in with a couple of wickets including that of MDU skipper Craig Hoober for a duck.
Phillip Island’s Thomas Blackwell guides Sharks home against OMK
OUTTRIM Moyarra Kongwak almost succeeded in defending a moderate score but couldn’t get the better of Phillip Island’s Thomas Blackwell whose unbeaten 63 stood out like a beacon.
Blackwell strode to the crease at number three when his captain Kurt Lane was dismissed for 18 and despite wickets falling around him, he didn’t look back,
Jaxon Hayes was damaging for OMK with 3/9 off just three overs, Nicholas Auddino the Diggers’ other multiple wicket taker grabbing 2/18 from seven overs.
OMK started the match solidly after its skipper Luke Jones chose to bat at home, he and fellow opener David Creed putting on 35 runs for the first wicket before Jobe Williams bowled the Diggers skipper for 16.
While Creed went on to make a determined 46, OMK was dismissed for 116.
Kohen Beaumont (2/21) accounted for Creed, while his skipper Lane snavelled 3/12, both sending down their full eight-over allotments, with Andrew Tolley grabbing 3/23 off one over less.
Koonwarra L/RSL chases down imposing Imperials total
IN A round characterised by low B1 totals, Imperials and Koonwarra Leongatha RSL defied the trend, the Cougars passing the challenging
target of 207 with five wickets to spare, a blistering Isuru Darshana knock setting up the win. He faced just 39 balls but blasted 80 runs before being bowled by Kristian Gray.
Anthony Hunt (40), Kayden Scrimshaw (34) and Michael Thomas (31) were the other Cougars who contributed significantly with the bat.
Gray (3/47) was the only Imperials bowler to manage more than one wicket, while Isaac Bolge couldn’t break through but was commendably economical, conceding just 27 runs in his eight overs.
Earlier, a dashing Clint Honeysett justified Imperials’ decision to bat first, the number four batsman registering a dashing unbeaten 108 off just 95 balls.
Opener Gary Sauvarin (38) was the only other decent contributor with the bat but Imperials benefited from a generous extras tally of 33 that included 14 wides and four no balls.
Darshana preceded his stunning knock with 3/35 from seven overs.
Paris Buckley was the other Cougar to manage more than a single wicket, claiming a couple of top order victims in his 2/28 off eight overs.
Inverloch bowlers set up win over Town
WHEN a rain-shortened 28 over-a-side match got underway at Scorpion Park, home side Leongatha Town soon found itself under
pressure from the moment young opener Ethan Smith was knocked over for a golden duck, slumping to 4/9.
Inverloch’s opening bowlers John Richardson and Isaac Seuren both proved disciplined and destructive.
Richardson made the first couple of dismissals and sent down six overs for a stunning return of 2/3, while Seuren’s 2/12 at exactly two runs per over was also excellent.
Left handed batsman Colin Bruce did his best to resurrect the Scorpions’ innings after coming to the crease at 3/8, going on to make 33 runs from 50 balls.
Levi Hickey and Lochlan May showed late resistance with the bat for Leongatha Town, both making 15 not out at better than a run a ball, the Scorpions mustering 7/88.
Inverloch’s openers then laid the foundation for victory, Riley Harris making 32 and skipper Brett Debono 31.
However, the Leongatha Town bowlers staged a fight back, the Stingrays eventually only winning by four wickets, albeit with a little more than five overs to spare, with Jesse Dugard’s determined 13 not out helping guide Inverloch home. Fletcher McLennen (3/21) and Smith (2/23) each sent down six overs, Smith putting his disappointment with the bat behind him to deliver a strong bowling performance on a challenging damp day.
