B Grade, Division 2

KORUMBURRA won the toss and sent OMK in to bat in B Grade Division 2 last Saturday but that was as close as they got to the ladder leaders.

In an opening stand of 149, Russell White 132 not out and Andrew Sorensen 47 combined superbly, at a tick under a run-a-ball to put the Diggers in the boxseat.

In fact Sorensen’s was the only wicket to fall in the OMK innings of 217 with White going on to pass the 100 without offering a chance, and Justin Greenwood knocking up 27 off 29 balls in a nice little cameo at the end.

In a player-of-the-day effort, White followed up with 3/7 off five overs, sharing the wickets around with Greenwood 1/11, Harvey Sorensen 2/16, Ryan Watt 2/6 and the 501st gamer George Lomagno who took 2/7 off two overs in a fine display in the field by OMK.

In fact, all four of the top teams had a win on the day, none more important than Wonthaggi Club’s who replaced their opponents on the day, Killy-Bass on percentage in fourth place when they chased down the modest target of 127 in the 36th over; Mitchell Davey 33 and Kyle McGregor 42 leading the charge in a “good team effort” from Club at McMahon Reserve.

Catches win matches

The aggregate score of the day was hit up at Royal Rhyll in the match between Phillip Island and Foster but it may have been the catches that went down that robbed Foster of an away win.

They gave lives to a couple of Sharks players before they went on to add useful runs, including Daniel McCausland who was dropped early at midwicket before going on to make 44 not out, figuring in two late partnerships with Drew Fusinato 16 and Tarryn Allan 11 not out to take the team’s total from 172 to 238.

The feature knock of the Sharks’ innings, 73 by Sarith Angelo was chanceless, however.

The Tigers were up for the fight, when their turn came, with Jake Chaseling backing after having a hand in four Island wickets in the field, including a brilliant direct-hit run out from the boundary, to start the chase well with 24 before Andrew Pattie went on to make 96, tragically run out in reach of the three figures.

Ultimately they got behind in the run rate and finished with a creditable 6/188 off their 40 overs.

Other matches

In the other B Grade Division 2 match at the East Campus, Nerrena was too good for Glen Alvie, polishing off their modest target of 112 in the 29th over.

Brian Gannon was the stand out for Nerrena with 63 not out and while there was a clatter of wickets in the middle stages, Cameron Baudinette brought it home with a handy 23 not out.

In the Glen Alvie innings, opener Steven Smith made easily the biggest contribution with 43 but was out in controversial fashion “obstructing field”.
