Nyora bowlers defend solid total against MDU
Glen Alvie captain Lachlan Harris launches one at the Wonthaggi Turf on Saturday.

• A Grade, Division 2

WHILE Meeniyan Dumbalk United recovered from a shaky start to its innings to make a go of chasing Nyora’s testing target of 252, the mountain proved too steep for the Demons to climb, falling for 220.

MDU skipper Joel Sinclair gave his side a chance on day two, steadying the ship after it fell to 2/29.

Sinclair took an attacking approach, notching an impressive 81 off just 83 balls that included 13 boundaries.

Tharindu Nuwan (38) and Mitch McGrath (36) were the other MDU batsmen to help the Demons get within cooee of the Nyora total.

However, Nyora skipper Henry Dolphin followed his solid week-one knock of 42 by claiming 4/77, including the valuable wickets of opposition captain Sinclair, and McGrath.

Jake Henry helped remove the MDU middle order on his way to 3/28 from 10 overs, sending Scott Browne on his way cheaply, then accounting for the well set Nuwan.

While Dolphin was a little on the expensive side, with an average of just over 4.5 runs scored from each of his 17 overs, teammate Aidan Simmons conceded a miserly 46 runs from 19 overs and claimed the scalp of MDU opener Colin Knox.

Korumburra builds on day one work to beat Foster

KORUMBURRA had little to do on day two to claim a first innings win over Foster, already sitting on 1/66 in pursuit of the Tigers’ 120 all out and losing just one more wicket prior to passing that total.

Number three batsman Harshika Fernando added to his day one tally of 48, eventually being dismissed for 89.

His was the fifth and final Korumburra wicket to fall, with the first innings total of Foster already comfortably eclipsed.

Steven Hamill was the victorious Cobras’ next highest scorer, recording 38 not out.

While expensive, Tiger Brad Coates took four of the five Korumburra wickets claimed, including Jacob Whiteside early on day two, and the later prize of Fernando.

Coates finished with 4/61 from 11 overs.

Jake Staley was the other wicket taker for outclassed Foster, taking 1/19 from six overs, having given the Tigers early hope of defending their low score with the day one wicket of Korumburra opener Tom Crocker.

However, Staley didn’t bowl on the concluding day of the match.

Glen Alvie batsmen fire on day two, beating Club

WHILE the Wonthaggi Club bowlers made a strong start to their defence of their batsmen’s 163-run total, having Glen Alvie at 2/37 after day one, the chasing side took command when the contest resumed.

Club removed Glen Alvie skipper and keeper Lachlan Harris for 44, giving Wonthaggi hope, with Glen Alvie still needing 70 runs for a first innings win, but that proved Club’s last hurrah.

Ben McRae held firm in Glen Alvie’s seven wicket win, finishing with a patient unbeaten 72 off 194 balls, well supported by Matthew Dakin’s unhurried 25 not out from 57 balls.

While Emmett Dempsey couldn’t add to his two day one wickets for Club, he sent down a further five overs, finishing with 2/21 from 14 overs.

Andot Mankhong took the only wicket Club claimed on day two, finishing with 1/47 but conceding almost a run-per-ball.

While teammate Jai Williamson went wicketless, he made Glen Alvie’s batsmen work for their runs, yielding just 23 off 18 overs, with Luke McGuirk also keeping the pressure on Glen Alvie, giving up just 18 runs from his 13 overs.

Still, patience paid off for the chasing side.

Phillip Island takes week one win over Kilcunda-Bass

PHILLIP Island wrapped up a comprehensive first innings defeat of Kilcunda Bass on day one of the sides’ match at Cowes Recreation Reserve, making 198 all out in reply to 57 all out.

The clubs agreed not to play the second innings, with Phillip Island assured a top-two finish to the home and away season, and little to gain for last-placed Kilcunda-Bass.
