PHILLIP ISLAND welcomed Nyora over the bridge and the visitors won the toss and sent the hosts in to bat first.

The Sharks relished being sent in and despite losing six wickets, as partnerships were just getting going, they were able to churn out a strong first innings total of 6/168 after their 35 overs.

Opener John Manning (69) was the standout, along with the Island skipper Michael Cleary (28*) who finished unbeaten.

Dylan Ford (1/25 from 7) was a positive with the ball for the visitors.

In reply, Nyora just could not find the same magic as their opponents, losing regular wickets throughout their innings and failing to get the run rate up high enough, they ultimately fell 92-runs short, finishing 8/76.

Keith Linford (23) top-scored, while David Ivey (2/2 from 1) impressed with two wickets in his solitary over for Phillip Island.

The Sharks will now host Wonthaggi this weekend, while Nyora will get the early Christmas break as they have the bye.

Koony too strong

THE Leongatha Velodrome became Koonwarra’s home deck on Saturday as they welcomed MDU down the road.

The visitors won the toss and sent Koony’ in to bat first.

The Cougars were able to resurrect their innings after being in a spot of bother at 2/10, thanks to a fine knock from opener Shane Paterson (33 from 43).

The Koony skipper Kevin Thorne (43 from 55) was able to finish off their 35 over innings in style too, with a nice unbeaten total, just seven runs shy of a half century.

Lachie Bell (2/25 from 4) was the pick of the bowlers for MDU as the Cougars finished 9/173.

In reply, the Demons tried their best to chase the 174 required for victory, but the Koonwarra attack proved too strong, led by Spencer Chadwick (4/21 from 7), who inspired a great performance.

The Cougars dismissing the Demons for 99, securing the 74-run win, Joshua Brown (21 from 41) top scored for MDU, they’ll now face Korumburra this weekend.

As for Koony, they’ll head down to Inverloch to face the Stingrays.

Inverloch d Korumburra by forfeit.

Kilcunda-Bass bowlers pile pressure on Glen Alvie

GLEN Alvie’s challenging chase began disastrously with home side Kilcunda-Bass reducing it to 2/0, dismissing openers Clint and Levi Gooch for ducks.

The visitors needed 168 for victory, and the pressure was mounting when Ryan Luke fell for five, reducing Glen Alvie to 3/6.

While a few batsmen got solid starts, Jack Brown’s 29 was the top score, with Kilcunda Bass winning by 61 runs.

The Sharks bowlers all made solid contributions, with most of them conceding few runs and Hunter Bettles, Ashley Joseph and Pat Rubeis taking two wickets each.

Captain Joseph led the way earlier with the bat, scoring 68 and helping ensure the Kilcunda Bass bowlers had a good total to defend.

Joe Reilly was next best for the eventual winner, making 30 runs.

Young bowler Will Hynes was Glen Alvie’s most damaging option taking 4/17 off five overs.

He bowled Joseph, with his other successful deliveries also accounting for Kilcunda-Bass top and middle order batsmen.

Tai Bolding was Glen Alvie’s other wicket taker with 1/14 off his four overs, ending the innings of Kilcunda-Bass keeper and opener Luke May when he was on 20.

Big win for Leongatha Town over Koonwarra Leongatha RSL

Leongatha Town 9/188 def Koonwarra Leongatha RSL 72 all out

Home side Leongatha Town elected to bat first, overcoming a shaky start to build a big total against Koonwarra Leongatha RSL.

The Cougars bowlers had the Scorpions at 5/57, which became 7/105 but Town bounced back through the efforts of skipper Paul Carter (53) and Michael Warren (43 not out).

Jai Brocklebank was a major reason Leongatha Town was under pressure early, knocking over opener Tim Cashin (23) and number three Nigel Hodges (17) and finished with 3/29 off his six overs.

Koonwarra Leongatha RSL was set a difficult 189 to win at 5.4 runs per over.

The chase never got going, with the fall of opener Gabrielle Perry for 7, a steady stream of Cougars wickets began to tumble.

Jason Browne top scored for the beaten side with 21, with captain Glenn Matthies (12) the only other Koonwarra L/RSL player to reach double figures.

Unsurprisingly, with the Cougars total score being just 72, there were no weak links in the Leongatha Town bowling attack.

Carter (4/9) and Cameron Dowling (4/24) starred.

OMK def Phillip Island by forfeit.
