POOWONG travelled to Catani on a cold, wet, windy wintry day not suited to good football.

The ground was heavy early and deteriorated further as the day progressed, and was very heavy in the finish with little grass visible.

Poowong had four changes, with Conor Cunningham, Jarvis Brown, Matt Cozzio and Joel Norton coming in and Brady Rayner, Micah Williames, Aaron Damon and David O’Neill going out.

It was a tough day for footy, with Catani looking for their second win and Poowong hoping for their fifth.

Poowong kicked to the clubrooms end but unfortunately for them Catani started well, having a good quarter and scoring 3.2 (20) to Poowong 1.1 (7), with Jack Hazendonk the Magpies’ goal kicker, and the 13-point Catini lead was decisive as conditions deteriorated.

The second quarter was a slog with Poowong the only team to score a goal, which came from Under 18s player Pat Dorian, the halftime margin just six points, with Poowong 2.3 (15) to Catani 3.3 (21).
Catani were holding their sponsors day and what better for the club than a victory in the Seniors, but this game was still up for grabs and Jack Hazendonk, Conor Cunningham, and Mitch van’t Hof were leading the way for Poowong.

Catani had the better of the third quarter, adding two goals to Poowong’s single major that was booted by Zac Gray.

The Blues held a 14-point lead at the last change, which would be hard to chase down, the three quarter time score being Poowong 3.5 (23) to Catani 5.7 (37).

Poowong were working hard but the Magpies’ pace of recent weeks was lost in the heavy conditions, making it difficult for the young Poowong team.

Still, the Magpies outscored Catani in the last quarter, Poowong registering 2.2 (14) to Catani 1.7 (13), with both Poowong’s goals coming from Steve McInnes who is playing well after coming back from a knee injury.

Poowong went down by 13 points, the final score Poowong 5.7 (37) to Catani 6.14 (50).

The Blues deserved their victory, being better in the conditions.

Best Players for Poowong were Jack Hazendonk, Conor Cunningham, Mitch van’t Hof, Anthony Orsini, Alex Henshall and Jarvis Brown.

Home next Saturday versus Nilma Darnum; see you there.
