POOWONG welcomed Longwarry players, members and supporters to Poowong for the local Anzac Day round in the Ellinbank League who have held an Anzac Service together for a number of years.
Ground conditions were good with a big crowd in attendance.
Netballers, football players and administrators lined up for the Anzac Service before the Senior game and observed a minute’s silence.
The day was overcast early with rain arriving for the second half, no wind and lights on at half time, and very dark in the last quarter.
Poowong was forced to make two changes Jett Blackwood with a broken ankle (work) and Patrick Dorian shoulder (training) both U18 players and Seniors were replaced by Alex Henshall and Blake Rout.
Poowong players wore black arm bands to honour reserves player Connor King’s father Brendan, who tragically passed on Friday night, condolences to his family and friends.
The day started with the Poowong fourths having a good win remaining undefeated.
The thirds missing a couple with injuries suffered their first loss with Longwarry playing well. Unfortunately, there will be no juniors next weekend.
With Nyora having no juniors this was the second no-game in four weeks with Clubs having no thirds, a problem in this age group and something the AFL must address.
Tough day for the Reserves but they battled it out with Longwarry having a good win.
The Seniors also had a tough day with injuries and no bench in the last quarter.
This very young side battled it out and the scores did not reflect the contest. Poowong’s young players holding their own in much of the play, then falling down in the final contest up forward.
Poowong kicked to the Drouin Road end however Longwarry were on the ball early following a mark in front, Poowong’s defence were working hard Joel Norton and Mitch Van‘t Hof leading the way.

Alex Henshall kicked the home side’s first goal, quarter-time Longwarry 5.6.36 Poowong 1.2.8.
Poowong were first to score in the second quarter with a goal to Connor Isles from a hand ball, they then went forward from the bounce with Longwarry’s defence clearing the ball.
The boys were working hard as Zac Gray kicked Poowong’s third.
Joel Norton was a big loss to Poowong’s defence with a hand injury as they struggled to contain Longwarry’s full forward Jason Wells with his strong leads and marking.
Half-time Longwarry 13.10.88 to Poowong 3.3.21.
The rain arrived for the third quarter Alex Henshall added a good running goal, went forward a few times only to have the kick fall short.
Longwarry kicked six goals at three-quarter time it was Longwarry 19.17.131 to Poowong 4.4.28.
The fourth quarter started with the light fading, Poowong adding two goals both to Connor Cunningham who was working hard, unfortunately the strong Longwarry side added nine to win 28.20.188 to Poowong 6.4.40.
The Anzac medal was awarded to Jason Wells with 13 goals.
The scoreboard showed a big win to Longwarry, to their credit the young Poowong team played some good football with no bench in the last quarter the lads were spent by the end of the game.
Best Players: Mitch Van’t Hof, Alex Henshall, Zac Gray, Thomas Burgess, Mitch Molloy and Connor Isles.
Next week off to Nyora for the Demon Cup hopefully the injury list improves, the Reserves game approx. 12 o’clock kick-off.
Any players looking for a game of football or netball come along and support the various grades, a good family club with good facilities you will enjoy.
