ANDREW Richardson toiled manfully for Meeniyan Dumbalk United, starring with the ball on day two as the Demons knocked over Leongatha Town 25 runs short of the MDU total.

Richardson finished with 5/55 from 26 overs, with his skipper Craig Hoober (2/22) MDU’s only other multiple wicket taker.

While five Leongatha Town batsmen made scores of at least 20, Colin Bruce’s 38 runs was the top contribution, with Hoober having him stumped by Anthony Dyke.

Richardson proved damaging from early in the Scorpions’ innings, bowling Town opener Davern Goss for just three runs.

He also accounted for Leongatha skipper Luke Ashton (26), then continued to make breakthroughs in the Scorpions’ middle and lower orders.

Tyrone Zukovskis helped build the foundation for MDU success with his score of 56 on day one.

Inverloch up to demanding task against OMK

INVERLOCH responded in style to the imposing 247-run target set by then top of the table OMK on day one.

Brett Debono’s 81 was crucial in the Stingrays’ four-wicket win, a performance that now has them heading the ladder.

John Richardson’s 36 was next best for the winning side, opener Riley Harris making just one less.

All but one Inverloch batsman called on reached double figures in a solid team effort.

Nick Wylie was the only OMK bowler to strike more than once, claiming 3/81 from his 17 overs.

Adam Trotto, with 1/70 off the same number of overs, caught and bowled Inverloch’s star performer Debono.

Cougars fall just short of Phillip Island total

A DETERMINED innings of 77 from opener Michael Thomas had Koonwarra Leongatha/RSL in with a shot at Newhaven Recreation Reserve, but Phillip Island’s bowlers dismissed the Cougars for five runs less than the Sharks’ total.

Phillip Island skipper Kurt Lane and Timothy Niven each took three wickets, conceding just 88 runs between them from a combined 44 overs and continuing their excellent season with the ball.

Phillip Island president Andrew Finlayson, who played in the match, said left arm opening bowler Niven would have bowled more overs if not for a restriction on how many junior players can send down.

Under 17 player Niven has played some A grade cricket this season as well as representing the LDCA in junior ranks.

Keeper Finlayson gives Lane some stick, telling him he doesn’t get much turn but praised his skipper’s ability to vary his pace, something the opposition batsmen find tough to get a read on.

Thomas’ resilient knock for the Cougars lasted 165 balls and he made Phillip Island work hard to dismiss him after the Sharks dropped him late on day one, while late order batsman Paris Buckley delivered a near run-a-ball 31 not out.

While all looked lost when Mathew Boswell fell for a duck with Koonwarra Leongatha/RSL still 32 runs behind, number 11 batsman Adam Drury provided good support for Buckley and contributed 12 runs.

Medium pacer Aidan Williams accounted for him, finishing with the tidy figures of 1/10 from seven and a half overs, an impressive display for someone who has barely played this season and was having his first bowl for the campaign.

Determined Sauvarin lacks support as Imperials fall well short of Korumburra

GARY Sauvarin’s steadfast 28 off 119 balls was comfortably Imperials’ top score with only a couple of others reaching double figures as a powerful Korumburra bowling display achieved a 105-run Cobras’ win.

Although Darren Scott recently said his retirement is likely to come soon, the Korumburra veteran’s performance suggested he might reconsider, if his body permits, the medium pace outswing bowler taking a delightful 5/21 from just under 18 overs.

His haul included the important wicket of Sauvarin.

Korumburra captain Shane Dole claimed a couple of scalps and allowed just 11 runs off his 14 overs, while Mathew Olden also struck twice and yielded only 18 runs from eight overs.

OMK completes job against Phillip Island

OUTTRIM Moyarra Kongwak entered day two in a commanding position after the sterling opening-day exploits of its president Russ White, who snavelled 6/45 and went to stumps unbeaten on 48 against visitor Phillip Island.

OMK began the second day on 2/78, powering to a six-wicket victory.

While White was on 88 when Phillip Island’s first innings total was surpassed, the sides agreed to play on for a little longer, enabling him to make it to 101 not out by the close of proceedings.

Brad Hayes lent solid support as OMK chased the modest target of 150, the number four batsman eventually dismissed in the mid-thirties.

Kilcunda-Bass continues dominant display against Korumburra

KILCUNDA-Bass began the second day against Korumburra already 42 runs ahead, soon declaring four down with a first innings lead of 104, the Sharks bowlers then again making life tough for the Cobras batsmen.

While Korumburra showed more resilience with the bat second time around, it lost 7/154 by the time stumps were drawn.

An unbeaten 73 from Scott Williams was the game’s top score, with his Kilcunda-Bass teammate and skipper Bradley Waldron another significant contributor with 32 runs.

Thomas Sorrell was the only Korumburra bowler to take more than one wicket, managing 2/50 from 11 overs.

When Korumburra batted again, opener Pierre Dunlevie put his first innings duck behind him with a score of 35.

While most other Cobras who batted fell cheaply, Kyle Dorman made a stubborn 71 not out at a strike rate of exactly 50.

Shark Jacob Havetta took a couple more wickets after his haul of three in the first innings, with Rohan Duff having the pick of the figures second time around with 2/30 off 11 overs.

Just about everyone got at least an over for Kilcunda-Bass, with 10 players bowling in the second innings.

Glen Alvie makes Wonthaggi Club work for win

GLEN Alvie’s bowlers made a stoic effort to capture six Wonthaggi Club wickets before the latter edged ahead on the first innings.

It was an impressive effort to inflict so much damage after Club began the second day on 1/46, needing only to reach 105 to get ahead.

With not too much to do, Club opener Mitchell Davey retired not out on his first-day score of 21.

A few of his teammates then fell cheaply but Justin Licis carried Club to the brink of victory with his 43 runs, while Chris Fraser made 28 not out at a run a ball.

Jack Brown was the pick of the Glen Alvie bowlers with his 3/21 from 11 overs including the first day wicket of Club opener Jack Sheerin.

Lachlan McRae’s 2/35 from 12 overs also impressed.
