WOMEN’S CRICKET

THE Phillip Island Women’s cricket team played their round three match against Leongatha at Rhyll on Sunday. The weather was overcast, and rain threatened as Captain Bec lost the toss. Sienna opening the bowling with precision and Winnie with speed. 

Grace claimed the first wicket, caught one handed by Rosanna behind the stumps. Bianca, Jess and Bec all bowled maidens, while Kate, Katie and Claudia demonstrated great accuracy and length, narrowly missing the stumps. Highlights included Sienna getting two wickets in a row, one bowled and one caught by Grace, a brilliant three wickets in total. Kate took a catch to give Winnie a well-earned wicket, and Grace clean bowled the opposition, giving her a second wicket. Leongatha finished their innings with 58 runs.

With rain threatening, the Islands opening pair, Sienna and Grace put on a quick 24 runs. Grace top scored for the Island with 18, including three 4s. Rosanna also slogged an impressive three 4s and together with Katie, the Island were 49 at the end of the eighth over. 

Claudia kept the runs coming, together with Bec sweeping an aggressive boundary. The Island 68 at the change. Bianca and Jess kept the 4s coming, with Bianca hitting the boundary at square leg and Jess two 4s straight down the ground. The Island reaching 94 runs. The final pair of the day, Kate and Winnie, ran quickly between the wickets and Winnie finished the innings with a brilliant boundary.

The Island finished their run chase at 131, remaining undefeated for the season.

The Island women play their next two games at 10 am and 2pm on Sunday, December 1 in a double header against Kilcunda-Bass at Bass.
