COMING off an unexpected win against Inverloch-Kongwak over Easter, the next challenge for Kilcunda Bass was taking on Phillip Island. It was always going to be a battle for the Panthers against one of the best teams in the side.

An intense and respectful Anzac Round clash unfolded at Cowes Recreational Reserve on Saturday, with Phillip Island Seniors securing an 18-point win over Kilcunda Bass in front of a strong and appreciative crowd.

The game was a true reflection of the Anzac spirit – tough, honest, and played in great spirit by both sides.

After an even first quarter, the Bulldogs lifted in the second, with their class across the ground and forward-line strength proving the difference.

Five goals to Kilcunda Bass’ one was just the start of the run for the Bulldogs in the second quarter.

The Panthers showed fortitude in the second half coming back within six points at three-quarter time with Brody Connelly adding two goals and Dean McRae, Bradley Aldwell and Timothy Gunn taking a goal apiece, against the Dogs one goal to Jaymie Youle.

But it wasn’t to be with the Bulldogs biting back like a fish out of water. Nick Anderson added a goal for the Bulldogs whilst Billy Taylor added three. The opening fourth quarter goal by Lochlan Scott was only matched by the last for the Panthers by Dean McRae.

Billy Taylor was a standout, booting six goals in a dominant performance. His efforts were rewarded with the Gary Todd Medal, awarded to the best Phillip Island player in the Anzac Round clash.

The Anzac Medal, recognising the player who best exemplified the qualities of courage, skill, teamwork, and fair play, was awarded to Travis Tuck of Kilcunda Bass, who led by example and was instrumental in keeping his side in the contest throughout the day.

Phillip Island’s victory was built on a strong team effort, with key contributions from Jaymie Youle, Yianni Caffieri, Hayden Bruce, Zak Vernon, and Jordy Patullo.

While Kilcunda Bass fell short on the scoreboard, they earned full respect with their relentless pressure and competitive spirit.
