A Grade, Division 1

A CLOSE battle was waged between Leongatha Town and the Imperials in round two of the A1 competition.

Ultimately, two runs crowned Town the winners.

Playing at Scorpion Park, Town won the toss and chose to bat first.

Imperial’s bowler Isaac Bolge claimed the wicket of Ron Abeysinghe early, but the partnership of captain Jesse Giardina and Buwaneka Wakishta went on to make 25 and 32 runs respectively,

making an impact on the scoreboard.

Jack Hume later contributed 25 runs, but low scores kept the hopes alive for the Imperials.

Timothy Sauvarin was the top bowler for the Imperials, taking 3/16.

Bolge, vice-captain Lachie Wright and Aydan Williams were also multiple wicket-takers.

Town had a challenge ahead with a final score of 10/152.

Imperials captain Jack Ginnane had his team on par with Town’s efforts, making 23 runs before he was bowled by Wakishta.

Williams later top-scored with 43 runs before he was bowled by Rhett Hume.

Gary Sauvarin and Klayton McGrath tried to make up the difference late in the innings but were stopped with 19 and 17 runs respectively.

Jack Hume took the most wickets for Town with 3/31.

Rhett Hume, Wakishta, and Ethan Smith claimed two each.

The Imperials were bowled out just shy of their target with 10/150.

Korumburra concedes to Nerrena

NERRENA’S efforts against Korumburra saw the Red Caps head to the top of the ladder early.

The teams travelled out to the Poowong Recreation Reserve, where Korumburra won the toss and chose to bowl first.

Nerrena made a strong start with the opening partnership of Jack Curtis and Loc Roberts making 71 and 43 runs respectively.

Captain Tom Cameron and Timothy Wightman added to the victory with 33 and 51 runs.

Wightman was not out at the end of the innings.

Single wickets were taken by Steve Hamill, Andy Millar, Jason Richards and Tom Crocker.

Nerrena set the target at 4/221 for Korumburra.

Korumburra had a gradual start to the innings, with Rumesh Rangana top-scoring with 51 runs midway through the innings.

Richards and Matthew Allen contributed 21 and 34 runs respectively.

Nerrena bowlers Archie Gannon and Wightman claimed two wickets each.

Korumburra conceded defeat with a score of 9/148.

Sharks defeat Cougars

A TON to Phillip Island’s Daniel Mock assisted the Sharks on its way to defeating Koonwarra L/RSL at the Koonwarra Recreation Reserve.

Phillip Island began its winning way with the toss, choosing to bat first.

The opening partnership of Brodie Johnston and Lachlan Cleeland had Phillip Island off to a solid start, making 20 and 37 runs respectively.

Johnston’s wicket was taken by Blake Smith at 1/43, sending Mock in.

Mock made 115 runs and was not out at the end of the innings.

Thomas Niven and Kohen Beaumont followed on with 27 and 26 runs.

Singles wickets were claimed by Koonwarra L/RSL bowlers Smith, Callum Buckland, Jason Kennedy and James Rushton.

Phillip Island made 4/234 before swapping over with the Cougars.

Opening batsman Anthony Hunt kept Koonwarra L/RSL in it with 21 runs, but Rushton and Buckland were dismissed for one run and a golden duck respectively.

Amad Mujtaba stepped in and top-scored with 50 runs before he was dismissed by Zac Brown.

Kennedy contributed 49 runs later in the innings.

Brown was the best bowler of the day, taking 3/24.

George McCausland and Jobe Williams took two wickets each.

Phillip Island claimed victory as Koonwarra L/RSL finished its allotted overs with 8/156. 

Geyer’s 107 triumphs for Club

A 107-run effort from Wonthaggi Club’s Alex Geyer saw Club sail past OMK’s score to take the win.

OMK travelled out to Wonthaggi’s McMahon Reserve and won the toss.

The swift dismissal of OMK’s opening partnership saw captain Koby Brann and Ryan Williams step up.

They made 76 and 71 runs respectively, allowing OMK to reach a competitive score of 6/190.

Club’s Fraser West claimed 3/23 and captain Joel Brann took 2/37.

Geyer opened the batting for Club with Mitch Thomas, who made 71 runs before he was bowled by Ethan Lamers.

Lamers claimed two wickets, with Jake Cochrane being the one to dismiss Geyer.

Club won the day with 3/192 in the 30th over.
