IT was always going to be a tough day against premiership favourite Nar Nar Goon, but the young Inverloch-Kongwak Sea Eagles battled on until the end.

The Sea Eagles travelled to Nar Nar Goon on Saturday, where the home team would ultimately celebrate a 75-point win in round 17.

In good conditions for footy, the opening quarter was an arm wrestle as both sides fought to make their mark on the scoreboard.

Inaccurate kicking by Nar Nar Goon allowed Inverloch-Kongwak to steal the first goal of the game, with Oscar Toussaint kicking truly to get the Sea Eagles fired up.

Inverloch-Kongwak’s defenders held up well, led by Lewis Rankin and Jarvis Pryor, but the Sea Eagles had trouble getting the ball out of their backline.

Nar Nar Goon started to show its dominance and had kicked three goals to Inverloch-Kongwak’s one by the first break.

The second and third quarters were a similar affair, with Nar Nar Goon chipping away at Inverloch-Kongwak’s chances of a comeback.

Inverloch-Kongwak continued to fight, but the Goon maintained its control of the ball.

Nar Nar Goon missed a few opportunities that prevented a true blow out, but Inverloch-Kongwak also could not convert.

By the fourth quarter, it was a mental battle for the Sea Eagles.

Nar Nar Goon was able to kick away and extend its winning margin out to 75.

For Inverloch-Kongwak, Paul Pattison played the best game of the day through the midfield.

Kilcunda-Bass also lost its round 17 game, which helped Inverloch-Kongwak’s season stay afloat.

Inverloch-Kongwak dropped back down to seventh place, but the difference between the Sea Eagles and Kilcunda-Bass is less than one per cent.

It is anticipated that coveted sixth position will come down to the final round. Inverloch-Kongwak’s run home includes Koo Wee Rup, the Warragul Industrials and Phillip Island, so it will need to beat at least one top six team to make finals.

The Sea Eagles are set to play Koo Wee Rup at home in round 18. They last met Koo Wee Rup in round 10 and came away with an 11-point win.

Another tight contest is expected this weekend.
